Realistic Watercolor Portraitures by Ron Malone.

This class is for intermediate or advanced watercolor painters.

We will focus on six portraiture elements:

  1. Excellent value structure — the light and shadow pattern creates convincing facial form.
  2. Controlled edges — notice how some contours are crisp while others dissolve softly into the paper.
  3. Preserved whites — highlights on the nose, cheeks, and eyes are often simply untouched paper.
  4. Temperature variation — warm skin tones contrast with cooler shadow areas.
  5. Selective detail — the eyes and focal areas are rendered sharply, while hair and background remain more suggestive.
  6. Transparent layering — you can still feel the luminosity of watercolor rather than opaque paint sitting on top.

I supply professional watercolor paper for each class project.  Most will have the subject pre-drawn on the paper. This is not a drawing class, so we can jump right into painting after instructions and demo.
